History
The fighting sport of Jendo which was called the “Ruweda Sport” was first introduced in a competition among Jendo students organized by its founder Grandmaster Abaya in 1989 at the Jose Rizal College athletic ground (now known as Jose Rizal University).
The sport known for so many years in the Philippines as the AFC Sport is a competitive fighting sport that can be won by forcing an opponent to retire by knockout, three consecutive knockdowns, by point advantage, by three consecutive throwing techniques and or by pinning an opponent to the ground and holding him in control for 15 seconds. |  |
It was formally launched in the 1994 1st Mandaluyong Regional Invitational Martial Arts Tournament which was dubbed then as “Mayor BEN ABALOS Cup”
The event, organized by the founder himself, was sponsored by the then Honorable Mayor Benjamin S. Abalos, Sr. It was the first and the biggest martial arts competition held during that time in the City of Mandaluyong. It was highlighted with a grand parade in the opening with an estimated three thousand participants coming from the city's different elementary, high schools, college students, boys scouts and girls scouts, CAT and ROTC cadets and cadettes, Barangay, SK's and City Officials youth and civic organizations coming from nearby cities and municipalities. To popularize the Jendo ring sport (Ruweda Sport), Grandmaster Abaya thought of introducing it to the practitioners of other martial arts disciplines from various organizations in the Philippines. After the approval of its registration with the Securities and Exchange Commission and the review of its draft of competition rules by the Philippines Sports Commission (PSC) in November 4 of 1996, the competition of Jendo under the Philippine Full Contact Self-Defense Federation was held at Don Bosco Technical College Gymnasium in Mandaluyong City on March 8, 1997 with the then PSC Chairman Philip Ella Juico's consultant - Victor Caluag and PSC special project officer Chito Santos as the Special Guest of Honor.
On April 12 to 19, 2008, subsequent to the successful hosting of the 1st Asian Martial Arts Games last November 29 to December 4, 2007 at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium in Rizal Memorial Sports Complex and the recognition of the International Martial Arts Games Committee in the 5th IMGC Congress held at the Hotel Manhattan in Bangkok, Thailand during the 3rd International Martial Arts Games, Jendo is now included as one of the sporting event in Estonia, 4th International Martial Arts Games along with Aikido, Karate, Judo, Tae Kwon Do, Kurash, Kung Fu, Muay Thai, Oriental, Kicboxing, Tang Soo Do, Haedong Kumdo, Pancration and Sambo.
Jendo at the umbrella organization of IJF under the IMGC will be played in the Estonia 4th International Martial Arts Games with two (2) events, the Jendo Ring-Figthing Sport and the Arnis Floor Exercises and Sparing Sport.
